Good tires save money with auto insurance discount

Drivers who rarely think about their tires may want to think about their wallets. Properly inflated tires can save drivers on gas, and residents in northern state who buy snow tires can qualify for auto insurance discount rates.

This week, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) is highlighting how tire care can lead to better fuel efficiency and safer driving, for the 8th Annual National Tire Safety Week.

Drivers are urged to check their tires regularly for air pressure and proper alignment. Drivers should also routinely have their tires rotated and check for uneven wear on the tires' tread.

In tough economic times and with gas prices climbing once again, preventive maintenance can help consumers stretch their dollar. RMA said Americans waste 1.2 billion gallons of fuel every year by driving on underinflated tires.

Maintaining tire pressure can improve road safety by providing increased steering and braking control, especially on slick surfaces. Improved safety is why some carriers may offer auto insurance discount rates for drivers with snow tires.

Proper tire inflation is also good for the environment, by reducing fuel consumption to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Caring for tires extends their life, cutting down on the number of tires that have to be disposed of in junkyards and landfills.
